Background
Location: Cobham, Surrey
Client: Chasemore Farm
Located in Cobham, Surrey, Chasemore Farm is a leading thoroughbred stud whose redevelopment called for innovative and durable structural solutions tailored to equestrian needs. Hockley & Dawson provided comprehensive design services for most of the farm’s buildings, including new reinforced concrete bridges over the River Bookham Brook, main stables with bespoke oak timber roof trusses, specialist foaling and isolation units, and essential agricultural infrastructure.
Our design integrated advanced drainage systems, raised embankments, and robust foundations to ensure resilience against flooding and operational demands. Through a sensitive balance of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering techniques, we delivered structures that enhance both functionality and longevity, supporting the welfare of the horses and the farm’s ongoing success.

Site Context
Nestled alongside Bookham Brook, the farm’s expansion required careful coordination of civil and structural design to address flood risk, ground conditions, and equestrian-specific operational requirements. The works integrated seamlessly with the existing rural setting while enhancing the farm’s world-class training and breeding capabilities.
Key Structural Interventions
Bridges & Civil Works
- Design support for new ancillary infrastructure including roads, drainage, and bridges
- Design and construction of two new reinforced concrete curved bridges, weir, and abutments spanning Bookham Brook which had very varied levels and was subject to high volumes of flood waters.
- Raised embankment works with detailed structural construction to ensure stability and flood resilience.
- Comprehensive drainage strategy for the entire site, balancing operational needs with environmental considerations.
- Integration of a French trench drainage system to maintain dry, healthy stable environments.
- Main Stables & Associated Buildings
Specialist Stable Units
- Main Stables: Reinforced hollow concrete block walls, bespoke oak timber roof trusses, steel frame structures and a robust foundation system.
- Foaling Unit: Foundations supporting an octagonal steel frame superstructure, plus a gabion retaining wall for site level management.
Agricultural & Ancillary Buildings
- Muck Bunkers: Piled foundations with ground beams and reinforced concrete superstructure walls for durability and containment.
- Durable, low-maintenance materials selected for longevity in a high-use agricultural environment.
- Bespoke timber elements, including oak trusses showcase craftsmanship while meeting structural performance criteria.
- Civil and drainage designs prioritised environmental management and animal welfare.
Summary
Hockley & Dawson’s work at Chasemore Farm demonstrates our capability to deliver complex, integrated engineering solutions for specialist rural facilities. By combining advanced structural analysis with a deep respect for craftsmanship and site context, we created infrastructure that will serve the farm’s operations for decades, supporting both the welfare of the horses and the farm’s operational efficiency.
