Home in Surrey

Background

A five-bedroom, three-bathroom thatched property in Surrey.

Project Overview

The works included a new triple garage with first-floor accommodation above, designed with a matching thatched roof to complement the original building. A striking two-storey glazed link connects the new extension seamlessly to the existing house. Together, these additions create a generous new living environment with significantly enhanced spatial quality.

Hockley and Dawson were appointed as structural engineers for both the substructure and superstructure, delivering innovative and cost-effective design solutions to realise the project.

The garage substructure presented a particular challenge, as it needed to be carefully engineered to ‘float’ above the ground to protect the root systems of nearby mature trees.

The superstructure combined traditional and modern approaches, with steel framing used to create a dramatic open-plan kitchen and living area with a vaulted roof. The design also incorporated future-proofing measures, enabling a floor to be added above the space if required at a later stage.
